For big technology companies whose research and development budgets stretch into the billions of dollars, such spin-outs can be a useful way to monetize projects that would have otherwise lain dormant or even been closed down.

Kevin Allison has an insightful FT piece on how organisations and VC's are partnering to spin out non-core R&D projects. The Microsoft IP Venture program is a good case in point as exhibited by its current catalogue of technologies available for licensing. Here's hoping this initiative is adopted by non-tech industries alike so that more R&D projects get a shot at making it from concept to reality.
