I have had the pleasure of getting to know a number of voice coaches. Watching them work their magic with singers of variable ability and across a number of music genres has been very insightful. Each have their own personal techniques in helping people to find their voice.

Some choose to only work with children while others possess the self belief that they could teach any person, regardless of age or ability, to sing provided they shared their passion to do so. I asked one of the former group to describe why they would only work with children. She replied …

To a child there is no such thing as failure only feedback. Otherwise we would never walk which is really mastering the art of falling forward. Don’t you think it is ironic that as a child we learn by listening before we learn to speak, read and write but as we grow up we develop these skills but forget or choose not to listen. A listening culture is a pre-requisite to achieving two-way communication. Learning to walk and talk are truly remarkable achievements. Children are uninhibited by fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD). Baggage many of us acquire on our journey into adulthood.
