Sony and Microsoft are in the news at the moment announcing major restructuring initatives. One for lacking in confidence the other for being over confident. While both have very different cultural dynamics at play Microsoft is today where Sony was 5 years ago. Each are victims of their own success. Getting so big and unwieldly they were unable to keep strategy and structure in flow. It was notable that the former leadership of Sony, many of whom were directly responsible for the organisations success, were unable to regain the self confidence that made Sony a household name. Howard Stringer has a formidable task ahead of him in restoring Sonys fortunes. Time will tell whether Steve Ballmer has the ability to right some of the wrongs. Both stories reinforce the importance of reinvention and the art of abandonment within organisations.
